Industry Session | OCLC update: Celebrating Special Libraries
Saturday July 13, 2024 1:30pm - 2:00pm EDT
While SLA celebrates it's 115th anniversary, OCLC is "only" 57. During that time, many special libraries have been OCLC members and have great stories to tell, great ideas to share, and wonderful histories of their own. Join OCLC's Brad Cole, Library Services Consultant for the US, for a brief update on how OCLC partners with special libraries. He'll also introduce new services and features that can be tailored for the specific needs of special libraries, including our new linked data offerings and the exciting Choreo Insights analytics package. We hope you'll swing by and stop into booth #15 for a chat with Brad. Happy anniversary!

Poster 2.5 - The IR Venn Diagram: Diversity in Technology, Content, Users, and Roles in Specialized institutional Repositories
Monday July 15, 2024 2:30pm - 3:00pm EDT
Institutional repositories (IRs) first emerged in the academic environment in the early 2000s [1]. In the more than 20 years since the first IRs were launched, how do academic library IRs support their institutions’ diverse goals? In this poster, librarians from six academic libraries * – representing various sectors including science, technology, engineering, medicine, music, and large universities – collaborated to explore and reflect on the academic IR community that encompasses specialized libraries, collections, and formats. The poster spotlights diversity in technology, content, users, roles, priorities, and challenges. It also illustrates some of the common threads and opportunities that have relevance and implications in both the special library and the broader IR landscape. This will be a “poster conversation” where we will engage attendees about the repositories at their own institutions and give them an opportunity for meaningful discussion. CS 30 min. | Data Mining Conference Proceedings for Competitive Intelligence Insights
Monday July 15, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm EDT
Conferences are an important resource for gathering industry intelligence through the sharing of knowledge and experiences among attendees. There are also insights to be discovered from analyzing the technical programs or conference proceedings, categorized as grey literature. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how a corporate library/information organization can play a role in competitive intelligence by data mining the technical program abstracts from conferences for competitive intelligence insights. The presenter will discuss methods of analyzing the various data fields such as author and affiliation collaborations, concept mapping, and historical perspectives by leveraging analytic software tools. A case study will also be used to illustrate how the ExxonMobil library partners with SMEs to analyze technical program abstract data and how it fits into a broader systematic competitive intelligence “playbook” for organizing conference attendance, synthesizing, and communicating useful information to internal stakeholders.

CS 30 min. | Powering the AI Engine: Navigating Copyright & Technology
Monday July 15, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm EDT
In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), copyrighted content is the fuel that powers these systems. To capture their full potential, Large Language Models (LLMs) rely on high-quality content including books, scholarly journals, news, and a wide range of online and specialty publications. Copies of content are made and stored in the use of AI, and organizations using these technologies face infringement risk. This presentation will cover the intersection of AI and copyright, including the importance of licensing to enable the legal use of copyright-protected content for the training and ongoing use of AI solutions.

CS 30 min. | Scholarly & Almetric Indicators; Smart Citations
Monday July 15, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm EDT
Scholarly & Almetric Indicators
In this session, participants will gain a familiarity of the various scholarly and almetric indicators that will be useful to assist faculty and researchers in showcasing their research. Higher-level practical examples will be demonstrated using a researcher's articles and the journal in which they published, as well as relevant databases that could be used to produce a portfolio of evidence-based metrics. The information presented will be useful at the faculty, departmental, college level, and for organizations such as pharmaceutical companies. It will also be useful to help researchers who are applying for immigration status, as well as tenure and/or promotion. Altmetrics can also be useful to compare the productivity of departments with peer or aspiring institutions. In industry, such metrics allow companies to assess the impact of their research and publications spending. Gaining this knowledge will help information professionals to offer additional services to their clientele.
Smart Citations: All Citations Aren't Created Equal
As part of the session, attendees will learn about how Scite has developed Smart Citations– citations that go beyond traditional citations by showing citation statements—the in-text sentences where references are used— the section they appear within the citing articles, and a classification indicating whether the paper provides supporting or contrasting evidence to the cited claim from the referenced work. Learn how this can be used to more reliably track impact.

CS 1 hr. | Who Owns and Cares about the Data? A Method for Identifying and Gathering Information for Research Investigations
Monday July 15, 2024 4:00pm - 5:00pm EDT
Information overload has always been a challenge. And today with search algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) such an ever-present part of daily life and media consumption, the challenges in learning how to filter information for oneself for effective processing, interpretation and analysis have only increased. This session will present several frameworks that were created for instructing students to assist with addressing this. They were tested and refined over four years in a core MBA course focused on decision making and project-based work. They include ways to conceptualize the broad areas of information available for decision making as well as how to identify information by thinking about who is producing it, why they are producing it and who their key customers are. Other frameworks presented deal with ways to identify pertinent information and how to process and work with it as part of a research investigation. The frameworks covered in this session are in the article by Ann Cullen and Patrick S. Noonan entitled “Who Owns and Cares about the Data? A Method for Identifying and Gathering Information for Business Research Investigations.” Business Information Review, vol. 38, no. 1, 2021, pp. 21–27.

Tuesday July 16, 2024 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
Most information, announcements, updates and discussions can be done via email. Email is a great way to make sure everyone gets the same information at the same time in the same way. I love the meme about meetings, “This could have been an email.” But, sometimes, there are topics, concepts, direction, announcements or other information that is best communicated in person or via a Zoom meeting, depending on your work situation.

CS 1 hr. | Building Taxonomies from the Bottom Up and Top Down: Technologies and Collaboration
Tuesday July 16, 2024 10:30am - 11:30am EDT
Taxonomies are as relevant as ever. Search technologies (matching words in texts) still have accuracy limitations, users have come to expect an like faceted search, wider adoption of linked (open) data relies on shared metadata is based on controlled vocabularies, the connected data benefits within enterprises of ontologies and knowledge graphs depend on underlying taxonomies, personalization and recommendation also rely on taxonomies, and even the newest large language models yield improved results when provided with context coming from a taxonomy. To be effective, taxonomies need to be custom-designed to fit the context of the content and users involved in a particular implementation. Many organizations have taxonomies already, but they likely were created for limited, legacy purposes. New initiatives and new use cases require new or renewed taxonomies. Legacy taxonomies are just one of several sources to consider when creating a new taxonomy. This presentation will take a fresh look at designing and creating taxonomies, considering the latest methods recommended by taxonomy consultants. Taxonomies are built with a combination of bottom-up and top-down methods. Bottom-up includes manual analysis and using various technology solutions (including text analysis, search log analysis, and generative AI). Top-down methods focus on the collaborative input of stakeholders (including workshops, focus groups, and interviews). Collaboration is also needed to maintain a taxonomy. Whether you are new to creating taxonomies or would like to know the latest recommendations, this session will provide valuable recommendations and tips to get you started.
